What it looks like

Footie tricks » Around the World

How?

“Around the World is the original freestyle soccer move. It was invented by Maradona and involves kicking the ball upwards and then moving your foot swiftly around it. The first step towards doing a Round the World is kicking the ball lightly with the side of your foot and then making a fluid movement around it. Kick it with your little toe to go outside the ball, or your big toe to go around inside the ball. Make sure the movement is smooth, not jerky, so you can carry on doing kick-ups afterwards. If you’re struggling then first try doing some simple keepy-uppy steps (see Keepy Uppies) then balance the ball on your foot/ankle. Then, once you’ve got enough grip, do the Round the World action, gently. Don’t give up; it’s just a question of repetition. The more you do, the better you’ll get.”

Why?

“Around the World moves don’t have much application on the pitch, unless you’re a very confident player and you really want to show the opposition what you’re made of! However, the ball control required to master Around the World will undoubtedly improve your game, so it’s worth learning!”

Tips & drills

Start by doing simple keepy-uppies. Once you’ve mastered that, try to move your kicking foot away from the ball while the ball’s in the air. Then have a go at looping it round the ball’s bath. The hard part is getting your foot at exactly the right angle to let the ball bounce directly up again.
