How?
“The ability to head the ball is vital in football, whatever position you play in. It is a form of control. The forehead is the safest and most effective part of the head to use. The ball should make contact directly with the centre of your forehead so that it doesn’t fall down at an angle. Therefore, good concentration and accurate head-eye coordination is a must. By bending your knees and arching your back on impact, your head control will improve in turn through using your whole body as a shock absorber for the ball.”
Why?
“Just as the foot is used in many elements of the game, the head is used to control, direct and re-direct the ball during play. There are various forms of header: attacking, defensive, diving, glancing and so on. Each one uses a different technique and achieves a different result, but the important thing to remember for all of them is that the movement involves your whole body, not just your head.”
Tips & drills
Watch the ball onto your forehead and bend your knees.
