What it looks like

Tackling » Block tackles

How?

“The block tackle is the most effective way of winning the ball off an opposition player as she dribbles it towards you. Start by planting the non-tackling foot firmly on the ground to provide an anchor, your knee bent slightly forward to centre all your force down on the ball. The inside of the foot is used for tackling, not the toe, and it’s important to put your full weight behind the ball and to get your head down over the ball. Timing is everything; you should execute your tackle when your opponent is slightly off-balance or offering you ‘too much of the ball’.”

Why?

Tackling is used by all players on the pitch as a way of winning the ball back from the opposition. Block tackling is the simplest form, and is used when a player comes towards you with the ball, hoping to move round or through you.

Tips & drills

“Aim a short distance behind the ball, therefore inducing you to follow through and concentrating the maximum force on the ball. Remember to go for the ball, not the opposition player’s legs; if you go for her legs you are likely to be called up for fouling.”
