What it looks like
Set plays » Corner
How?
Corners are opportunities for scoring goals. The player taking the kick decides whether to take a short ball (usually to a player waiting nearby) or a longer ball across the goal mouth (to players near the far post). The rest of the team usually crowds around the goal, trying to keep the defenders guessing about their plans. When the whistle goes, the players spring into position and (ideally) smash the ball into the back of the net.
Why?
“A corner is given when a player of the defending team knocks the ball over her own back line. Corners are taken by a member of the attacking team from the nearest corner. Corners are opportunities to score goals through crosses, as the ball can pass right in front of the goal mouth.”
Tips & drills
Practise a range of corner techniques, long and short. You have to have more than one up your sleeve or your opposition will get wise.
