What it looks like

Passing » One-two

How?

“The one-two pass is a simple move that involves two players. Player one passes the ball to player two, who immediately passes it back again. It’s important that both players keep moving up the pitch and that player one runs into space as soon as she has played the ball. This way the opposition has a hard job keeping up and trying to intervene. An effective one-two requires an understanding between the two team mates. The key elements are accuracy in passing, timing and speed. Both passes should be weighted and timed so that the player receiving the ball does not have to alter her stride.”

Why?

“Doing a one-two is a great way of working the ball through the defence, avoiding going offside, creating space in the midfield and avoiding tight marking. The one-two can even be played in defence if players want to weave their way around the attacking opposition. It is a useful technique that enables players to break free from tightly marked situations and to work their way up the pitch towards the goal.”

Tips & drills

Start by zig-zagging up the pitch, passing between you and a partner. Only introduce your opponent when you are confident passing quickly and accurately.
