Passing » Passing technique

How?

For passing the ball, many parts of the foot can be used. The simplest and most accurate method for short distance passing is to use the inside of the foot, which presents a large flat surface to the soccer ball. The instep is used for long ball passing, the heel can be used to pass behind and the outside of the foot can be used to pass quickly to one side or to bend the ball to pass it around an opponent. Passing skills are important for sharp, accurate play.

Why?

“Passing is vital for keeping possession in the team and controlling the game. There are different types of pass, each one using a different technique and achieving a different result. For example, short passes use the inside of the foot and not much force, and enable the ball to move swiftly between team mates who are running close together. Long passes (up to a pitch length) require more force, use the whole body and are most useful for goalkeepers.”

Tips & drills

Pass to a partner a short distance away, and gradually increase your spacing so that you’re attempting longer, more powerful passes.
