What it looks like

Goalkeeping » Rolling the ball

How?

“To roll the ball out successfully, the ball needs to be in the palm of your strongest hand. Put your opposite leg forward, bending at the knee, and then bring your arm through as you transfer your weight forward, releasing the ball when it is level with the front foot. Exaggerating the follow-through will help increase distance, but make sure you don’t let go of the ball too soon or too late. As with most things, the trick is in the timing and practice makes perfect.”

Why?

“One of the roles of the goalkeeper is to get the ball out to one of her defenders once she has caught or gained possession of it. The rolling throw is a great way to do this, but it should only be used over short distances as you cannot generate too much power throwing underarm.”

Tips & drills

Practise on your own or with a partner in a wide open space. Accuracy is just as important as distance.
