What it looks like

Turning » Stop turn

How?

“The Stop turn is all about running with the ball at full pace and then suddenly stopping it with your foot. It is one of the most simple turns, but often hard to execute because it involves great ‘braking’ strength. Whilst dribbling the ball, prepare to stop just ahead of it and at the same time, put one foot on the ball to stop it moving. Then brake and push off in the opposite direction, taking the ball with you.”

Why?

This move is often used to keep the ball in play as it heads off towards the touchline. The hard part is keeping the ball from running out but then maintaining possession of the ball and not leaving it open for a member of the opposition to pick up!

Tips & drills

You need good acceleration and brakes. These can be improved with thigh strengthening exercises and stop-start running.
